TAVON CENTER PROGRAM AIDE
JOB DESCRIPTION GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Program Director, this position will provide assistance with therapeutic activities including horticulture and vocational skills. Will also assist with personal care needs and daily activities of young adults with disabilities. Will accompany clients on community based activities and outings. Supervise clients during meals and snacks. Maintain confidentiality relating to client information.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Under the supervision of the Program Director, assist clients with their vocational skills according to their employment goals
Assisting with ambulation and exercise. Exercise participants with routine exercise or special range of motion exercise
Transfers with or without equipment
Under the supervision of the Program Director or therapist, perform simple procedures as an extension of therapy services, (i.e. physical, occupational and speech)
Assisting with therapeutic games/activities for participants as listed on the schedule of activities. This includes: word games, puzzles, coloring, dancing, music therapy, craft demonstrations, and mental stimulating activities scheduled on the monthly activity calendar
Supporting errands and outings. This will include safely driving the Access van or staying at Tavon Center with clients who are unable to go along with the group.
Preparing crafts and assist participants with craft activities
Preparing meals and snacks with clients for daily. Cleaning up clients after meal time. Set up tables for lunch time, distribute or assist participants with prepared meals, i.e., cutting and grinding foods for clients that have a need. Wash and sanitize tables after all participants
Assisting clients with toileting, personal hygiene, etc.
Assisting with various household cleaning and chores
Assisting clients with animal care
Teaching individuals horticultural tasks such as sowing seeds, setting out plants, moving compost bags, planting seeds and plants, lawn mowing, soil preparation and pruning
Demonstrating the use of tools and materials to ensure they are used safely
Helping individuals to record their tasks, by writing simple summaries or drawing pictures
Helping individuals to develop confidence and self-esteem through their work
Assisting individuals to improve their social and practical horticulture skills
Encouraging individuals to gain pleasure from land use
Closely observing individuals to monitor their progress
Assessing the effectiveness of individual’s programs
Adjusting activities to make them more effective
Promoting easier gardening and horticulture to the general public
Working within the budget provided. Being creative about re-use and cost saving techniques.
Attending farmers markets during the summer to increase community awareness about Tavon and sell the client’s produce and crafts
WORKING RELATIONSHIP:
Supervision shall be provided by the Program Director.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Working ability to recognize and respond to problem situations according to established procedures; to carry out specifically assigned tasks; to improve the physical and mental well being of individual clients; to gain the cooperation and participation of clients in following their treatment regimen; to maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and health care professionals.
Valid drivers license and ability to transport clients in company Access van in accordance with King County Metro Community Access Transportation
Ability to communicate with co-workers, flexibility in daily activities and job responsibilities, team player, creativeness and a fun attitude.
At least one year of experience in working with adults in a health care or social service setting.
Good knowledge of and practices of universal precautions for controlling the spread of infection.
Minimal Horticulture and/or Horticulture Therapy experience required.
